General
Usually, a welpen-unit consist of between 20
and 30 children and has 5 or 6 leaders. A welpen-unit is in Dutch
often reffered to as horde (wolfpack, plural: hordes).
Theme
As mentioned on the agegroups-page, the Dutch welpen-units
use the Jungle Book story as a foundation for their activities.
The stories from Rudyard Kipling about the little boy Mowgli who
grows up in a wolfpack (the sionee) are used in more countries
for scouting. Mowgli learns how to survive in the jungle from
Baloe (Baloo) and Bagheera, who made sure Mowgli was made
member of the wolfpack.
Activities
Activities for a horde vary from playing games and
learning to work together to base scouting-techniques, like first
aid and hiking. They could go search for Bagheera who's gone missing,
or find out about the "bear necessities" with Baloo.
Not all activities will be set in the Jungle, however.
When on summercamp, welpen often play in another setting,
like being astronauts on their way to the moon or searching for
a treasure that happens to be buried somewhere near the campsite.
